The Game PS5 Anniversary is here, and with it comes tons of downloadable goodies. The first is the Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, one of the most beloved video games of all time. The game introduced a new, open-world concept to video gaming and built a fan base that never shrinks. Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is more linear than previous entries in the series, but it also offers a fantastic variety. If you’ve always wanted to kill Liquid Snake or if you think it’s the most excellent video game to play, this is the game for you.
The story of Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain picks up shortly after the events of Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes. You find yourself aboard a train that was transporting people in an attempt to rescue the president from terrorists on board. The terrorists get away with the president and take over the train, kidnapping his daughter. You get into the action and help Snake, still alive, fight off the terrorists, and save the president. This is the third game in the Metal Gear Solid series, so you’re sure to get more of what you love from the first two games.
Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain improves the formula that made the first games so successful. You’ll find more customizable characters, more weapons, more stages, more multiplayer options… it’s just like the old games. And though there are new features, one of the best additions is the Move feature. You can now run, jump, crouch, and double jump, allowing you to move through the environment as fluidly as you’d expect from a game in this genre. One exciting addition to the gameplay is “raids,” mini-games that involve going from one platform to another while collecting items and other treasures. These aren’t exactly like the puzzles you’d find in typical platform games, but they provide a welcome change of pace.
The story follows Snake, who remains after receiving an anonymous call about a virus called Peace Walker. He’s taken under the command of a mysterious woman known as Cassetti. She wants Snake to protect her family – and she’s not about to let her little secret out. You’ll have to take care of multiple missions, including rescuing Snake and tracking down the shadowy organization that controls the game. Each mission takes you into a different world, filled with intrigue and opportunity.
On your way, you’ll meet some interesting characters, including an ambitious politician, a cyborg assassin, and even an ex-cop who knows deep down that something is wrong. There’s a strong plotline, too, one that threatens to keep you guessing until the end. But, it’s not typical hacking’simulator’fare. There’s no sneaking around a dozen weapons or hacking computer code to get the job done, so you’re instead accomplishing each task by exploring and reacting to the situations presented to you.
A big part of the fun involves exploring the environments in which you play. This means that your every move is affected by weather and environmental conditions. Rain, snow, and wind can slow you down or hinder your progress. As for the plot, you’ll need to save the Earth before the evil Dr. Darkkaner unleashes his plan. It will be up to you to get there first.
Remember, you have limited time to complete your mission. Each level takes about 20 minutes or less to complete. For some reason, I don’t ever seem to get bored with this game. I finish one mission, get frustrated at the poor animation work on the next one, and end up turning the next one in just for a new objective.
This game has an intense start, but it’s well worth playing through several times to pick up where you left off. The graphics are pretty nice, and it’s challenging to complete missions. One thing it does offer is an intriguing story that ties into the central theme of cybernetics. I would recommend this to people who enjoy good science fiction. It’s worth checking out if you’re looking for a new game that will keep you entertained.
